In 2019, Stats NZ on behalf of the GCDS contracted Bell Gully to write a report outlining the benefits, risks, and mitigations of storing iwi and Māori data in the Cloud.
Last week we released the Offshoring New Zealand Government Data Report.
Exploring Te Ao Māori perspectives on offshore data storage

Report: Offshoring New Zealand Government Data [HTML]
The report aligns to the wider Government Cloud Data Storage strategy and seeks to better understand Māori perspectives on data storage. It also aims to inform discussions and guide government agencies in their decision-making about storing data.
The report is based on interviews that were carried out with a mixture of iwi and Māori who specialise in Māori data kaupapa, as well as officials from various government agencies.
Kaupapa covered in the report includes the current storage landscape, policy, legal and decision-making frameworks, Māori needs and aspirations, the challenges and opportunities, and next steps for decision-making.
Following the report’s release, the Government Chief Data Steward will be working with government partners, the Data Iwi Leaders Group, and Māori to co-design guidance together that will be shared with government agencies.
