Data on scaphoid injuries in NZ.

I am conducting some research into managing suspected scaphoid injuries. I would like to know (1) how many scaphoid fracture injuries occurred between 2019-2024. (2) the breakdown of confirmed, suspected, probable and interim diagnosis listed on the ACC45. (3) the total and average days each client was unfit for work and/or fit for alternative duties. (4) the total and average cost of claims paid by ACC for these injuries.

Patient's being unnecessarily treated for scaphoid fractures when there readily available advanced imaging that could be requested by suitably trained providers.

Allowing analysis and cost analysis.

12 May 2025 Kia ora Official Information Act request, reference: GOV-039915 We refer to the request of 6 May 2025, asking for the following information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):  I would like to know (1) how many scaphoid fracture injuries occurred between 2019-2024. (2) the breakdown of confirmed, suspected, probable and interim diagnosis listed on the ACC45. (3) the total and average days each client was unfit for work and/or fit for alternative duties. (4) the total and average cost of claims paid by ACC for these injuries. The data requested can be found here: https://catalogue.data.govt.nz/dataset/gov-039915-acc-claims-data-on-scaphoid-injuries For information about the limitations of the data provided, please refer to the Notes and Caveats. We are unable to provide data for scaphoid fractures by ‘suspected, confirmed, probable or interim’. To extract scaphoid fracture claims data by these categories, would require us to manually review individual claim files. Therefore, we are refusing to provide this breakdown as it would require substantial collation and research to extract. This decision has been made under section 18(f) of the Act. In doing so, we have considered extending our timeframe to respond to the request and charging (as allowed under the Act). However, it has been determined that the resources required to extract the data would unreasonably interfere with the everyday functions of the team/s involved.
