Average Annual Daily Traffic for all roads in New Zealand

Average Annual Daily Traffic count data for all of New Zealand Ideally, the dataset would include all NZ roads (NZTA managed roads plus roads managed by local councils and alliances) Each road controlling authority is required to manage and make available AADT statistics for planning purposes - it would be far better to have a single nationalised dataset.

Knowing what level of traffic management is required for specific worksites.

Allowing roadworks planners the ability to look up the road level for any road in NZ and understand the impact their work may have as well as the level of traffic management required without conducting a site visit or making individual requests to the Road Controlling Authority.

Allowing consenting and auditing software to show the required level of traffic management required to both applicants and consenting officers.

I am preparing a resource consent application and the AADT information for Gisborne roads will be helpful. thanks

Hi, I am an UoA student and I am doing my fourth year project. We are working on a topic about how parked cars on road side affect safe intersection sight distance, and I need the AADT, the vehicle count data of New Zealand roads for data collection. Please provide me the dataset so I can use it for my result analysis. Thank you.

    Hi there,
Can you please give me a lead as to where i would find the information relating to daily heavy motor vehicle movements on the Kaimai ranges (State Hiway 29) in say 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2021.

Is there VKT data by region and by month? Ideally also by open/urban and local road/state highway.

I can find breakdowns by region and by year. I can also find YT 30 June by open/urban and local road/state.

Hi Rob. Unfortunately Waka Kotahi does not hold detailed traffic data for local roads, and you would need to contact the applicable local council for this. For aggregated annual traffic data by region for both state highways and local roads, please refer to the Vehicle Kilometres Travelled section on the following site : https://www.nzta.govt.nz/planning-and-investment/learning-and-resources/transport-data/data-and-tools/. For more detailed state highway traffic data you are welcome to contact Waka Kotahi on data@nzta.govt.nz.

I need daily traffic movements data for northland particularly for Matauri Bay Road

  • data@nzta (NZ Transport Agency)

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency does not hold traffic counts for all roads in the Nelson Tasman region. We recommend that you contact the relevant local authority for further assistance.

    Hello
    Lyndon
AADT for all NZ roads. wanting to analyse road count amounts for around Nelson tasman regions for road sweeping.

That link is OK for State Highway traffic volumes (but it would be nice to have locations in some known coordinate system rather than site IDs and text descriptions). However for many applications it's the non-State Highway network traffic volumes that are interesting. I understand that's beyond NZTA's scope, so I appreciate the effort so far.

  • Data@nzta

    Hello Richard,
Please check his link for travel volume:
    https://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/state-highway-traffic-volumes/ for traffic volumes.
for further info you can contact info@nzta.govt.nz

  • Richard Law

Amin, the VKT dataset does not give any indication of volumes on a particular road, which would be the problem to solve for road works. Even if you know the estimated distance travelled on non-highway urban roads, and the length of a particular road of interest, clearly the spatial distribution would not be uniform: e.g. a cul-de-sac would probably have less volume than a collector.

There is already a website where this information is available: https://mobileroad.org/index.html but it is extremely difficult to use (like seriously, how weird is that website?), and the data cannot be re-used or extracted outside of the application. It has ADT, % heavy volume, the date... all great data, just extraordinarily hard to find and use.

  • Amin (NZ Transport Agency)

Here are some useful data and report :
    https://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/userfiles/transport-data/VKT.html

    representative data : http://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/userfiles/transport-data/VKT.xls

*Above links data are up to 2017.

*VKT (vehicle Kilometre travelled) could suit more for the purpose as AADT are point base on count site and in term of applying road length to it will create VKT

    VKT = (AADT * 365 * Road_Length_in_Kilometer)

  • Salman Naseer

    Hi,
I am Salman Naseer, a Ph.D. student at AUT. I am working on "Cellular data offloading in smart cities by using vehicular network". I am in need of AADT, the vehicle count data of New Zealand roads. May kindly provide me with this data set, So, I may use it in my thesis/project to get real time results.
