This would list the top 1000 Māori names for babies for each year from 1954. Provided as a csv file with "years" as columns (two colums for each year: male, female). Each row would contain the position of the name in the top 1000, with the top name in the first row and the 1000th name in the last row.
1) Understanding how names have evolved over time, how the popularity of names from Te Paipera Tapu (Judeo-Māori names) / pre-Paipera names has changed over time.
2) Provide those training Artificial Intelligence (AI) for automatic transcription / speech synthesis with a list of names likely to be encountered. This would ultimately allow designers to create tools for e.g. government that are capable of working with Māori names which is not currently the case for tools delivered by almost all AI service providers.
1) Providing the raw data for analysis using data-scientific tools
2) Provide a list of names that can be inserted into text, found in recordings or recorded in studio and supplied to an Artificial Intelligence during training.

Tēnā koe Wendy OIA request 24/25 0281 Request for Top Maori Baby Names (Male and Female) Since 1950 Thank you for your Official Information Act (Act) request received by the Department of Internal Affairs (Department) on 23 October 2024. You requested – • Please provide me with a short list of common Maori girl’s names around 1950 On 10 October 2024 the Department responded and advised that we would likely refuse your request under section 18(f) of the Act. You were invited to rescope and narrow the scope of your request and to date no response has been received. Therefore, I must refuse your request pursuant to section 18(f) of the Act; the information requested cannot be made available without substantial collation or research. This is because the Department does not have the tools in place to collate and sort the data requested. As there is no data field that flags a name as “Māori”, this would mean a considerable amount of work and research would be required to collate the data. I can however, advise that a list of the top 100 girls baby names since 1954 is available at https://smartstart.services.govt.nz/assets/files/Top-100-girls-names.pdf It may be helpful for me to explain that Official Information Act requests, including data requests can be sent directly to the Department at OIA@dia.govt.nz. As this information may be of interest to other members of the public, the Department has decided to proactively release a copy of this response on the DIA website. All requestor data, including your name and contact details, will be removed prior to release. The released response will be made available here: www.dia.govt.nz/Official-Information-Act-Requests-2. You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602. Kia ora Wendy
Thank you for your OIA request to the Department of Internal Affairs.
The Department will provide its response to your request as soon as practicable and within twenty working days. The 20th working day is 21 October 2024.
As your current request stands it would take more than a few hours to pull the information that you have requested and is likely to be considered substantial collation, risking refusal. We are therefore asking if you are able to refine the scope of your request.
This is because the Department does not have the tools in place to collate and sort the data requested. As there is no data field that flags a name as “Māori” and would mean a considerable amount of manual work and research by our Analytics and Reporting team to collate. Therefore, your request is likely to be refused, pursuant to section 18(f) of the Official Information act; the information requested cannot be made available without substantial collation or research.
Should you wish, you can email your response to: SDOOfficialCorrespondence@dia.govt.nz and we can assist you directly.
Please note that in cases where the Department’s response provides information that is identified to be of general public interest, the response may also be published on the Department of Internal Affairs website. If the Department publishes its response to your OIA request, all personal information, including your name and contact details, will be removed.
Ngā mihi
