The licence on your data lets users know if it’s freely available for legal use, sharing, repurposing, and remixing. An open licence makes it open data!
Data.govt.nz automatically harvests from ArcGIS, so what you enter in your layer metadata determines the license on data.govt.nz.
We’ve created a quick guide to show you how to include the correct licence and re-use information on ArcGIS open data portals.
1. First, find the correct Creative Commons licence information for your data.
2. Once you know what licence you’ll be using you’ll need to copy the HTML.
The Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence is the default for New Zealand data.
The HTML code can be copied from the Creative Commons site for other license options or you can copy the code for the 4.0 licence here:
<a href=https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/><img alt="Creative Commons License" src=https://i.creativecommons.org/l/by/4.0/88x31.png style="border-width:0;" /></a><br />This work is licensed under a <a href=https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/>Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a>
3. Go to your Item page on ArcGIS Online.
4. Go down and hit Edit for the Access and Use Constraints section:
5. Copy and Paste license text HTML:
6. Save edits and share Item with the Open Data group.
